Author guide

Fagbokportalen turns your manuscript into a digital book that can be read on mobile, tablet, and desktop. The most important thing is not that the Word file is technically perfect, but that the content is tidy, easy to follow, and easy to read.

Your first publication

When you are publishing your first book, we recommend starting by uploading the manuscript as a private book. This lets you see how the content appears in Fagbokportalen before making it available to readers.

Use the private book as a preview: check that chapters appear in the right order, that the text flows well, and that images and tables work as expected. When you are happy with the result, you can prepare the book for publication.

Review it as a reader

It helps to read through the book the way a student, course participant, or professional reader will experience it. Is the chapter structure clear? Are tables readable on mobile? Do images make sense without heavy zooming?

Try asking a few questions in the AI chat as well. If the answers are unclear, it may be a sign that a paragraph should be clearer, that headings should be more descriptive, or that important context should be included in the text itself.

When updating a published book

Wait to update an already published book until you have reviewed the private test. This helps you avoid making large changes directly in a book readers are already using.

Small corrections can often be added quickly. For larger changes, such as new chapters, restructuring, or updated subject matter, it is worth spending a little extra time reviewing before replacing the manuscript on the published book.

Notify readers

Once the book is updated, you can use Notify owners to send a short message to everyone who has access to the book. This is especially useful when the update gives readers something new or important.

The message does not need to be long. Briefly explain what changed, why the update is useful, and whether there are chapters or topics the reader should revisit.

For those who want to go a little deeper

The Word file must be in .docx format and can be up to 50 MB. Use standard Word headings, normal paragraphs, bullet lists, numbered lists, tables, links, and images inserted into the document.

Avoid using Word as a pure design tool. Text boxes, empty lines, advanced column layouts, important content in headers or footers, and very complex tables can produce a poorer result in a digital book.

A good rule of thumb is that the manuscript should work as tidy text, not as a finished page in a printed book. This makes the book easier to read on small screens and makes the content easier to use with the AI assistant.
